El jueves 25 comenzaban las representaciones de ‘Tannhäuser’ en Bayreuth; dos días más tarde, ‘Idomeneo’ inauguraba el Festival de Salzburgo. Ambos Festivales, citas imprescindibles del verano, mantienen en esos dos días una cortesía que se remonta a sus primeros años de convivencia.
“¿Por qué Herbert von Karajan dejó de dirigir en Bayreuth en la década de los 50?”, se preguntó el antiguo secretario general del Festival de Salzburgo, Franz Willnauer. A pesar del éxito cosechado por Karajan con su versión de ‘Los Maestros cantores’ y ‘Tristán e Isolda’ en el Festival de Bayreuth, el maestro decidió ausentarse del foso de Bayreuth para siempre desde 1952.

Este gesto fue imperdonable para el entonces director del Festival de Bayreuth, Wieland Wagner, quien reprochó al director que sus ensayos estaban contaminados por el aburrimiento y el deterioro de su sonido. ¿Acaso Karajan era menos hábil para dirigir el repertorio wagneriano o simplemente quería causar esa impresión?
En 1967, Karajan dirigió con un éxito abrumador un Anillo de los Nibelungos en el Festival de Pascua de Salzburgo, probando la equivocación de Wieland Wagner – o su provocación hacia él -. Así, con esta actuación, Karajan introducía astutamente el repertorio de Wagner en Salzburgo evitando las coincidencias con Bayreuth: dirigiría Wagner solo en Pascua, dando origen así al Festival de Pascua del Festival de Salzburgo.
A día de hoy, el Festival de Salzburgo y el de Bayreuth mantienen la distancia de la misma manera que en sus orígenes, aunque el calendario de los músicos, que terminan la temporada sinfónica en junio, ha solapado prácticamente el calendario de los festivales.
