La carrera del compositor y director venezolano Giancarlo Castro D’Addona parece no tener límites, viene de celebrar varios exitosos estrenos de sus obras en EEUU y ahora acaba de ser nombrado Director Orquestal de la Reed College Orchestra, tratándose de la orquesta que realiza todas las actividades musicales de uno de los colegios universitarios más prestigiosos del mundo: el Reed College, nada menos que el lugar donde estudiaron figuras como Steve Jobs de Apple y Larry Sanger de Wikipedia. De esta manera se convierte en el primer latinoamericano en asumir ese cargo y comenzará a ejercer funciones en el mes de septiembre.

El larense es el compositor más importante que ha dado Venezuela entre las nuevas generaciones. Su música ha sido grabada por algunos de los sellos discográficos de mayor prestigio mundial como EMI Classics, Euroarts y Genuin. En Venezuela sus obras son interpretadas por orquestas de todo el territorio nacional, igual que en Latinoamérica y EEUU; en Europa recibe ovaciones en Alemania, Francia y Suiza, e inclusive en Bélgica y Holanda sus creaciones son usadas para audicionar talentos; naciones asiáticas como Japón y China también vibran con las notas que ha escrito. Suma más de 35 composiciones para orquesta, banda sinfónica, big band jazz, ensambles de metales, música de cámara, y bandas sonoras. Ha trabajado en la creación de libros de aprendizaje musical para niños con la editorial BIM de Suiza, que además publica e imprime sus partituras. Con su obra Rhapsody for Talents obtuvo la medalla de oro en 2 categorías de los Global Music Awards: Mejor Compositor y Mejor Score Original.

En esta oportunidad me siento muy honrado de haber sido desde un principio la principal opción para los directivos de Reed College para asumir esta posición, tratándose de una de las instituciones universitarias más prestigiosas de EEUU y su departamento de música tiene una muy distinguida relevancia. El joven maestro venezolano sustituirá al eminente compositor americano David Schiff, quien se retira luego de 38 años como director musical. El departamento de música del Reed College estuvo en la búsqueda de un perfil Director/Compositor para el cargo hasta llegar al venezolano, luego de haber sido altamente recomendado por su trayectoria internacional y por el amplio resultado obtenido en su primera temporada como director y profesor en otras instituciones musicales para las que trabaja en Portland, EEUU.
El Reed College es uno de los colegios universitarios de ciencias y artes más importantes e intelectuales del mundo. Además es la sede para los conciertos del Chamber Music Northwest que es uno de los festivales de música de cámara más importantes que se realizan desde hace 50 años en Portland, Oregon. Además de las celebridades ya mencionadas, de allí han salido egresados figuras como el poeta Gary Snyder ganador del Premio Pulitzer, senadores y políticos con visible actividad en EEUU, actrices nominadas al Oscar y diversos científicos que han dejado notables contribuciones a la humanidad.
